Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation: 2011 Goals Business Year Six (April 1, 2011 through March 31, 2012)

The purpose of the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation (TBBCF) is to raise funds to support cutting edge research aimed at eradicating all types of breast cancer. Through our efforts over the past five years, TBBCF has had the honor of funding promising clinical and preclinical researchers in cutting-edge breast cancer research. Of the dozens of proposals that have been submitted to TBBCF to date, eighteen $100,000 grants totaling $1,800,000 have been awarded to researchers at some of the most prominent oncology research centers in the world such as Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories.

The research that is being funded covers a wide range of important areas from preclinical to advanced clinical and from the scientist’s bench to the patient’s bedside and includes: exploring the underlying gene changes that occur in breast cancer patients, understanding the role of estrogen in the progression of breast cancer, gaining insight into which genes contribute to metastases and studying why resistance emerges to drugs currently used to treat this dreaded disease. A list of some of our grant recipients that have been funded to date is attached.

The following are our annual goals in support of finding a cure for breast cancer through the funding of research grants:

    Goal #1: Boost Sponsorship (35%)
Sponsorship is critical to the success of TBBCF. Our mission is to direct 100% of Foundation gross fundraising money to breast cancer research in order to find a cure. This can only be accomplished due to the generosity of our sponsors whose support covers our operating and administrative costs. In 2011, we will re-engage the 2010 sponsorship base, develop new sponsor relationships and increase overall sponsorship.
    Goal
    • Increase sponsor dollars to $70,000 in fiscal 2011 to support the general operating expenses of the Foundation.
    • Increase the number of sponsors by 25%.
    • Maintain existing sponsorship base at 90%
Goal #2: Secure Additional Funding for Critical Capital/Operational Improvements (20%)
TBBCF needs to make critical capital/operational improvements in order to deliver our vision, mission and goals. In order to fund these critical improvements, we will seek grants and leverage grant money to fund the most critical capital/operational improvements, with the primary focus on making improvements to the TBBCF web site.
    Goal
    • Secure grants totaling a minimum of $10,000.
    • Utilize grant money to make critical operational improvements including:
      • Improvements to the TBBCF web site as recommended by the web site committee to improve web site satisfaction of all who utilize it, resulting in significant improvement in satisfaction of TBBCF web site as measured by the post-Walk survey.
      • New equipment for key volunteer positions to replace old equipment that is not operational.
Goal #3: Increase and Engage the Foundation Volunteer Base (15%)
The business philosophy of TBBCF is best captured by the following Margaret Mead quote, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Volunteers are vital to the success of the Foundation’s vision, mission and goals. The volunteer base includes the Board of Directors, a Scientific Advisory Board, the Foundation Leaders and all those volunteers who make the Walk Across Southeastern Connecticut and other fundraising events a success.
    Goal
    • Increase the volunteer base from 202 in 2010 to 300 in 2011 with recruitment efforts aimed at increasing year-round support in the administrative/operational realm and ensuring that key Foundation Leader positions are filled in a timely manner with talented and energetic volunteers.
    • Continue to focus on creating a highly engaged volunteer base.
    • Update working practices for all key volunteer positions.
Goal #4: Organize and Market the Walk Across Southeastern Connecticut Event and Other Fundraising Events (30%)
Survey data from walkers and crew volunteers who participated in the five walk events from 2006 through 2010 indicate a high degree of satisfaction with the overall organization and implementation of TBBCF’s signature fundraising event. The goal for 2011 is to continue to improve the Walk Across Southeastern Connecticut by increasing the number of walkers, volunteers and our fundraising goals, all while providing a meaningful experience for everyone involved.
    Goal
    • Increase the number of walkers for the Walk Across Southeastern Connecticut from 357 in 2010 to 500 in 2011.
    • Plan an additional fundraising event in the spring.
    • Increase the total funds raised to $500,000 in 2011 in order to fund five research grants.
